Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) the largest Czech Spa is located in a picturesque valley of the Teplá River by its confluence with the Ohře River. The town is surrounded by forest hills. According to a popular legend, the hot springs were discovered by the Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV while hunting.
Carlsbad was built on terraced ground and gives the town a particularly attractive appearance. The elegant scenery of Carlsbad is composed of beautiful parks and avenues and of Spa woods spread on nearby hillsides. Amongst Carlsbad's other attractions is its unofficial “Thirteenth Spring” - from which the original herbal liqueur Becherovka is made as well as the International Film Festival which is held there annually at the beginning of July.
